Occasionally I feel inspired to capture my surroundings in the form of a live drawn data visualization. I have made up rules for myself to keep this a simple exploration that is time constrained. The rules are as follows:

Sit down somewhere comfortable with my iPad
Observe my surroundings for 15 minutes and make note of what is interesting and quantifiable
Start a timer and record the events visually
Stop at one hour, and take no more than 15 minutes to finalize the illustration

It’s a fascinating practice in observation, trying out different visualization techniques, noticing what you notice (and miss), and sitting still while the busy world moves by. You should try it sometime!
